VIRGINIA: Second death may be linked to botulism - (Roanoke Times)
November 20, 2007 – 7:27 pmThe Virginia Department of Health was cited as confirming a second death connected to the recent investigation of two possible botulism cases.
That confirmation comes just days after the death Friday of 75-year-old George Makarie, a retired anesthesiologist who lived in Roanoke County. Makarie was the husband of Dr. Ae-Sik Kim, 57, who was diagnosed with botulism and later died.
The story notes that authorities have not said if botulism was responsible for Kim’s death or connected Makarie to the second, unconfirmed case.
Meanwhile, at least one botulism expert has said that health authorities’ “veil of secrecy” over the cases has left the public without potentially lifesaving information.
