US: Bacteria blamed for increase in food recalls - (The Monitor)
November 17, 2007 – 7:44 pmOn Friday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recalled 98,000 pounds of frozen sausage rolls churned out by Double B Foods of Meridian, a supplier of such products chiefly to H.E.B. and to various private labels.
The story says it was the 53rd recall since January by the USDAs Food Safety and Inspection Service, considerably more than 2006s total of 34 but far fewer than 2002s 113.
Theres little mystery about the dramatic increase from last year to this: E. coli. Food safety people are on the lookout for the bacteria more than ever, says the USDAs Amanda Eamich.
She had no explanation as to why theyre finding more E. coli in food, but said the USDA has assigned more inspectors to find out whats going on.
