Jim Burket writes in this letter to the editor that there are two dairies in California that produce raw milk. They are Organic Pastures Dairy, located in Fresno, and Claravale Dairy, located in Watsonville. Those two dairies and the milk they produce are threatened with extinction come January 2008. A law, AB1735, was quietly passed without public notice or fanfare. It makes the production of raw milk in California pretty much impossible.
Raw milk is wholesome, fresh and unpasteurized. There is a growing need for more healthful alternatives in the American diet. Given that there is much doubt about the quality of the food that comes into this country, it would seem like the right thing to do would be to support our local family-owned farms and the products they provide. Raw milk and raw-milk products come from cows that are grazed on grass in pastures.
