Sharinne Sukhnanand writes to respond to your article entitled “Dairy Dilema” published on 10/31/07 about raw milk. It is unfortunate that one of our local farms is implicated in a conflict with the State, especially since raw milk is legal in New York and regulatory offficials are working hard to ensure the safety of the public.
Raw milk, like sushi and meat cooked “rare”, is a product that has foodborne illness risks. The Centers for Disease Control reported that between 1998 and 2005 there were 45 outbreaks, including 1007 illnesses and 2 deaths due to drinking raw milk. Most cases, however, go unreported. The most at risk for getting sick from drinking raw milk are people with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly, children, and those with chronic ailments.
