Hepatitis cases in MINN. may prompt warning for adoptive families - (KXnet.com)
November 6, 2007 – 7:44 pmST. PAUL–After two babies adopted from Africa spread a handful of cases of hepatitis A in Minnesota, health officials may consider new advice for international adoptions.
The Health Department says the children, two members of their new extended families and two others who came in contact with the relatives were infected after the children came to Minnesota in September.
International adoption agencies frequently encourage new parents to be vaccinated because children from developing countries come with higher risks of infections. However, extended relatives usually don’t get vaccinated.
Kris Ehresmann of the Health Department says the state may now formally recommend vaccinations for the extended families of the adoptees.
