CHINESE food safety officials learn from EU rapid alert system - (International Heral Tribune/Associated Press)

November 6, 2007 – 7:28 pm

BEIJING — Nearly 80 Chinese officials, according to this story, attended a European Commission training workshop in Beijing on Tuesday to learn from Europe’s rapid alert system for unsafe food.
China is trying hard to assure people of the safety of its food products after months of scares in which various exported products were found to contain unapproved or deadly chemicals.
European food safety officials hope a better safety system in China will improve the quality of its exports and boost trade. They also want to alert Beijing quickly of any faults they find in Chinese products sold in Europe.
The workshop is a chance for China to learn from other systems, including in the U.S. and Europe, to make sure tainted products don’t enter the market, said a Chinese quality control official who attended the meeting.
