WISCONSIN: Bacteria outbreak at Roberts School spurs new cleaning measures - (Fond du Lac Reporter)
November 2, 2007 – 7:28 pmAn outbreak of shigellosis at Roberts Elementary School has prompted the Fond du Lac School District to notify parents and undertake cleaning measures.
The Fond du Lac County Health Department has, according to a press release, been investigating a significant increase in the number of reported cases of shigellosis over the past three months, with Fourteen confirmed cases have been identified, compared to a total of three cases in 2006, according to the press release.
Several of the most recent cases occurred in students and staff at Roberts. Families with children attending the school were notified Thursday and additional cleaning measures have been implemented at the school.
Marian Sheridan, health and safety coordinator for the Fond du Lac School District, was quoted as saying, “Parents should keep their children home if they have diarrheal illness and inform the school.”
So far, all cases involve children, their household contacts or daycare and school staff.
