AUSTRALIA: Smallgoods maker breaches food standards - (ABC News Online (Australia))
October 31, 2007 – 10:57 pmThe company Conroy’s Smallgoods has, according to this story, plead guilty to violating food safety standards which could have led to a spread of potentially-deadly bacteria.
Adelaide Magistrates Court heard that an off-duty meat hygiene inspector had visited Conroy’s Bowden factory in Adelaide in August last year to assist a listeria researcher on an educational tour, and the inspector saw practices that could have resulted in a spread of the potentially-deadly bacterium.
Raw bacon was being packed by workers at one end of a room and there was packaging of cooked meats, such as salami, at the other end.
The court heard listeria can be transferred between raw and cooked meats and violation of the strict separation rules could lead to deaths.
Conroy’s could face a fine of up to $20,000 when it is sentenced next year.
