US: NMA supports the USDA - (Lean Trimmings)
October 29, 2007 – 3:21 pmFSIS announced last week a new strategy to improve its policies and procedures relating to E. coli O157:H7 control. NMA Director of Communications and Government Relations, Jeremy Russell wrote Under Secretary for Food Safety Dr. Richard Raymond to say that NMA supports the Agencys plan.
NMA believes that everyone involved within the meat industry must make a greater effort to control dangerous pathogens. One recall or one human illness attributed to E. coli O157: H7 is too many. To contribute to the awareness of such pathogens, as well as effective strategies to control these pathogens, NMA has redistributed important documents that explain industry best practices and has hosted several teleconferences to discuss new ways to combat E. coli O157:H7
NMA has been watching closely the studies of other pathogenic strains of E. coli and the new approach to testing that will increase the number of pulse field gel samples (PFGE).
