US: E. coli: scourge of the hamburger, plague of the kitchen - (The Auburn Plainsman)
October 24, 2007 – 5:38 pmBarney Wilborn, manager of the Auburn University Lambert-Powell Meats Laboratory, was quoted as saying in this editorial that, “E. coli is a naturally occurring bacteria that exists in the digestive systems of animals. It is always possible that meat from animals could be exposed to this type of bacteria.”
The editorial says that E. coli 0157:H7 is one of hundreds of strains of bacterium Escherichia coli. Most strains are harmless, but E. coli 0157:H7 was identified as the cause of an outbreak of illness in 1982 that was eventually linked to contaminated hamburgers. And since then, food containing E. coli has caused more infections in the United States than any other food.
