US: AMI Vice President of Scientific Affairs gives industry perspective on public health significance of non O157 STEC - (Meatami.com)

The public health significance of non-O157 shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) was the subject of a recent meeting co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Randy Huffman, AMI Foundation Vice President of Scientific Affairs, presented an industry perspective at the public meeting.
Dr. Richard Raymond, Under Secretary for Food Safety, USDA, indicated USDA was interested in answering questions concerning detection methods, prevalence of the organisms and public health concern and hoped the scientific forum would shed light on these and other questions. Dr. Robert Bracket, Director, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, FDA, indicated this was an opportunity for industry and government to get ahead of this issue, rather than reacting in crisis mode.
