CANADA: Health department slaps restaurant owners with 34 charges - (St. Catherines Standard)
October 16, 2007 – 6:32 pmNiagara Regions public health department has, according to this story, laid 34 charges against the co-owners of a St. Catharines restaurant at the centre of an E. coli outbreak in May.
The story explains that nine people, mostly children and youths, were sickened by E. coli infection after eating at the Yaman Restaurant on Merritt Street between May 17 and June 5 and that five of them needed were hospitalized.
The restaurant reopened in August after complying with public health directives, including having employees take food-handling courses.
Director of environmental health Bjorn Christensen was cited as saying the two owners still face serious charges, adding, “We had several people who became quite ill in this outbreak. Its a serious matter.”
Public health officials laid 17 charges against each of the restaurant co-owners under the Ontario Health Promotion and Protection Act.
Christensen declined to provide a list of the charges.
