NEW YORK: Schumer calls for legislation on meat safety - (Capital News 9)

October 14, 2007 – 11:50 pm

Albany, NY — Senator Charles Schumer was cited as saying more needs to be done with oversight of meat safety on a federal level. And that in light of two nationwide companies announcing major meat recalls, the USDA has become a “toothless tiger.”
The story says that Schumer will be pushing for legislation that would give the department power to temporarily shut down plants that fail E. coli bacteria inspections.
