ILLINOIS: Aurora grocery fined $3K over tainted cheese - (The Courier News)

Aurora — The owners of El Paso Carniceria grocery, 508 Grove St., were ordered to pay $3,000 after pleading guilty to selling “improperly labeled” and “adulterated” cheese during a 10-day period in April, one of the stiffest fines ever levied for a foodborne-illness offense in Kane County.
Claire Dobbins, director of health protection at the Kane County Health Department, was quoted as saying, “The fine is large because this particular grocery store has had a previous history.”
Fred Carlson, the county’s environmental health specialist, said a fine of $5 to $500 per day could be levied but, ultimately, the penalty came at the discretion of Kane County Judge Linda Abrahamson.
The story explains that a health department investigation found a Mexican-style cheese sample acquired from El Paso Carniceria that tested positive for the identical salmonella strain that sickened as many as 52 Kane County residents — 17 in 2006 and 35 in 2007.
