About 1000 tummy bugs a week were caused by bad water which was why the Government was moving to improve the quality of drinking water, Health Minister Pete Hodgson said yesterday.
He was speaking during debate on the Health (Drinking Water) Amendment Bill, which was given its third reading yesterday.
The bill is aimed at ensuring adequate and safe supplies of drinking water but some critics have raised concerns about the costs on local authorities.
Hodgson yesterday said the bill brought New Zealand into line with most other OECD countries by providing a clear legislative framework for water quality.
He said that while New Zealand had managed to avoid major and fatal outbreaks of water-borne disease, it still had significant issues and risks with the quality of drinking water.
