VERMONT: Cheese makers concerned by proposed FDA regulations - (Brattleboro Reformer)

October 10, 2007 – 8:15 pm

WESTMINSTER — Cheesemakers across Vermont are, according to this story, mobilizing against what they say is a significant threat to their industry.
The Raw Milk Cheesemakers’ Association, a national organization, was formed recently to address a growing threat by the Food and Drug Administration to issue new regulations on the sale of raw milk cheese.
If the FDA determines that raw milk cheese poses a threat to the nation’s food supply, it could mean the end of what has grown to be one of the strongest sectors of Vermont’s agricultural economy.
Mateo Kehler, part-owner of Jasper Hill Farm in Greensboro. and a member of the Raw Milk Cheesemakers’ Association, was cited as saying Vermont artisan cheese has come to be known for its unique flavor and texture.
