MARYLAND: Local farmers react to proposed food safety law - (Frederick News-Post)

A virulent strain of E. coli in fresh bagged spinach sickened more than 200 people and killed three nationwide in October 2006. As a result, the national Fresh Produce Safety Act was introduced Tuesday in the Senate.
Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Tom Harkin, the Iowa Democrat who introduced the legislation, was quoted as saying, “It seems these fresh-produce recalls have become the rule rather than the exception in the United States — and that is unacceptable. It is increasingly clear that the Food and Drug Administration lacks the resources — and the reach — to ensure the safety of the U.S. food supply.”
As an example he cited operations that grow and process leafy-green produce, and are inspected by FDA once in every three years, on average.
Harkin’s bill requires the FDA to establish national standards tailored to specific types of produce and the particular risk factors arising from the way each is […]
