TENNESSEE: Congress asks FDA to improve recall alerts - (Sidelines Online)

The U.S. Congress is, according to this story, working on a new bill that would require the Food and Drug Administration to find better ways to let consumers know about food issues, such as recalls, safety and contamination. Earlier this year, the FDA conducted a pilot program to better educate consumers about recalled food products, according to its Web site, www.fda.gov.
In the past month alone, there have been numerous food recalls across the country. Cheese, water for infants, raw cream and tofu were among the foods that were recalled in September.
Raw cream was the most recent recall, and had been manufactured in California. The cream was allegedly contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause a serious and occasionally fatal disease in children, the elderly, or those with a weakened immune system, according to an FDA news release from Sept. 21.
