Health authorities were cited as saying an unusually high number of infectious diseases have been recorded in Canterbury over the past two months, and that reported cases of campylobacter have risen from 24 during the week of September 17 to more than 30 last week.
The Medical Officer of Health, Ramon Pink, was cited as saying that cases of cryptosporidium, giardia and salmonella are also expected to rise, based on trends over the past five years.
Mr Pink says that is partly due to more human contact with infected animals, particularly in the dairy industry. He says people need to be vigilant about personal hygiene to avoid infection.
