WASHINGTON D.C.: Consumers urged not to eat recalled meat - (Reuters)
October 1, 2007 – 6:48 pmWASHINGTON — Consumers were urged on Monday to play a big role in making sure they do not eat any of the 21.7 million pounds of ground beef recalled by Topps Meat Company LLC that may contain the E. coli bacteria.
The U.S. Agriculture Department was cited as saying the recall, the fifth-largest in U.S. history, has generated reports of two dozen illnesses.
The department suspended the raw processed meat operations of Topps on Sept. 26 after an initial recall of 331,582 pounds of frozen ground beef products.
Richard Raymond, the Agriculture Department’s undersecretary for food safety, was quoted as saying, “This is frozen product” and could still be in home freezers” and that “consumers have a big role” in getting the meat out of circulation.
Raymond said USDA sent a food safety assessment team to Topps and found it did not follow proper meat-handling procedures.
