Scotland has higher rates of Escherichia coli O157 infection than other countries in the United Kingdom (UK) and Europe [1]. In recent years, between 200 and 250 cases of E. coli O157 infection have been reported annually; 85% of all cases are indigenous i.e. infections acquired in Scotland (or occasionally, in other UK countries); the remainder are imported infections, acquired abroad.
National Health Services (NHS) Grampian Public Health Protection Unit is currently working with Health Protection Scotland to investigate an outbreak of E. coli O157 infection in Aberdeen. Between 13 and 19 September 2007, nine confirmed cases of E. coli O157 infection have been identified. This is a preliminary report of the outbreak investigation.
