Buddhist monks who have formed the core of demonstrators up until now were notably absent from the mass protest in Yangon, Myanmar, on Thursday, Johan Hallenborg, a Swedish embassy official, told CNN. The monks’ absence suggested they were being arrested or confined to their temples, Hallenborg said.
