US: F.D.A. warns Procter & Gamble on hand sanitizer advertising - (New York Times/Bloomberg News)
September 19, 2007 – 6:34 pmThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration was cited as ordering Procter & Gamble yesterday to stop advertising that its Vicks foaming sanitizer for hands prevents the spread of viruses that cause colds, saying in a letter posted on the agencys Web site that FDA is not aware of enough evidence to show the product is safe and effective for such use.
The regulators ordered P&G to correct the violations or face legal action, seizure or an injunction.
The story explains that while the active ingredient in the Vicks product, triclosan, is covered under F.D.A. regulations for certain antiseptic uses, that does not include P&Gs directions that users should leave the sanitizer on their hands, without rinsing with water.
David Bernens, a spokesman for P&G, was quoted as asying, “We believe were within the F.D.A. guidelines, and were going to work with the F.D.A. to clear up any misunderstandings.”
