ILLINOIS: Antiviral marketing: NRAEF food-safety campaign targets viruses - (Restaurants and Institutions Magazine)

This year’s National Food Safety Education Month campaign zeroes in on viruses that cause foodborne illnesses.
Noting that viruses are the source of more than half of the foodborne illnesses recorded every year, the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) is focusing on virus awareness for National Food Safety Education Month in September.
A five-week series of posters and training activities is meant to educate managers and foodhandlers about noroviruses and Hepatitis A, the most common viral causes of foodborne illness. Both virus types can cause the misery known less graphically as gastrointestinal distress, and both are spread through contact with the fecal matter of infected persons. (Noroviruses also are present in infected persons’ vomit.) In its new campaign, the NRAEF’s International Food Safety Council (IFSC) emphasizes the need for thorough handwashing and early reporting of symptoms in the prevention of foodborne-illness outbreaks.
