Fear of swine flu in the early days of the outbreak sent people racing to grab up antiviral drugs just to feel safe, and that has caused concern among experts who worry about the virus developing drug resistance.
H1N1 is susceptible to two antivirals, Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir), which are helpful if taken within several days of having symptoms, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.
In the week after the USA had its first cases, new antiviral prescriptions at retail pharmacies were 19 times higher than in the previous week, health care information company SDI said Tuesday.
