OTTAWA — While the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario is battling an outbreak of a gastro-intestinal virus, a new Ontario government report reveals that workers at the hospital comply with hand-cleaning rules a mere 35.3 per cent of the time.
In the last week, CHEO has seen six new cases of rotovirus in its baby and toddler patient unit. In a statement, the hospital said that “rotovirus may also have further compromised the health of one fragile infant who passed away.”
The virus, which is highly contagious and can live on surfaces for up to 60 days, is the single leading cause of severe diarrhea in young children.
