AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas House has given initial approval to a measure requiring fish sellers to post signs warning pregnant women about the dangers of eating fish.
The signs would explain that some fish especially large fish such as swordfish may contain mercury that can cause birth defects.
The bill’s author, Houston Democrat Rep. Jessica Farrar, said mercury can cause learning disabilities, and problems with hearing and eyesight.
Some lawmakers in opposition said signs could discourage people from eating any fish at a time when they are encouraged to eat more.
The bill was approved 99-45.
