CALIFORNIA: E. coli impact is far-reaching - (Salinas Californian)

A year after a deadly, multi-state E. coli outbreak linked to fresh, bagged spinach grown in the greater Salinas area, the fallout from it still, according to this editorial, can’t be completely measured.
This we know: At least three people died, and more than 200 were sickened, some so severely they may eventually need kidney transplants. At least 93 lawsuits have been filed by victims. Spinach sales dropped by $77 million last year in Monterey County, and bagged salad sales fell by $10.5 million. Consumer confidence in salad products is still a bit iffy.
The editorial goes on to say that in response to demands by buyers and auditors, leafy greens growers say they’ve been forced to remove non-crop vegetation, such as filter or buffer strips that protect waterways and help remove soil particles and chemicals from runoff. More than 30 percent said they had removed such vegetation.
