Shigella on the rise in MISSISSIPPI - (WLBT Channel 3)

District 5 Health Officer Dr. Mary Armstrong was cited as saying that because an increase in Shigella has been widespread and it’s affecting all age groups, it’s not considered an outbreak, adding, “We’ve done some GIS mapping, and we don’t have any strong connection where it’s occurring from one place.”
Shigella can be diagnosed through a stool sample. The Health Department has been sending letters to affected individuals, or parents of affected individuals. They’re asked to call the department and answer a series of questions, which will help the department determine the origin.
Shigella is an infection monitored by the health department. “If it occurs in a daycare or in a setting where there are people grouped together, we can go in and do some teaching about hand washing and hygiene and how people can protect themselves,” says Dr. Armstrong.
To prevent it, Dr. Armstrong recommends you pay particular attention to hand washing. […]
