Rates of Campylobacter illness have fallen by more than 50% since the beginning of the year but, with warmer weather approaching, the New Zealand Foodsafe Partnership is predicting that the risk of this and other foodborne illness will increase.
“We expect that more people will suffer from foodborne illness as temperatures rise coming into summer,” says Sandra Daly, Deputy Chief Executive of the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA), speaking on behalf of the Partnership. “These illnesses are often preventable and National Foodsafe Week is held at the start of summer to remind everyone of the need for extra care when handling food.”
The week, which runs from 10-16 November this year, is supported by the Foodsafe Partnership, a coalition of industry groups, public health units, consumer organisations and NZFSA, and aims to raise awareness of foodborne illness and give consumers information on how to keep themselves and their families safe.
