I have a confession to make. I have drunk raw milk. Many times in fact. One of my favourite childhood memories is standing in the gutter and having my Grandfather or Aunt squirt milk directly from the cows teat into my mouth across a few feet. Unless I was a calf it would be pretty hard to get milk much rawer than that.
At the same time, I know enough about history to know that pasteurization came about for some very good reasons. People died, many of them children, from bad milk. Poor sanitary systems helped spread diseases like undulant fever, dysentery, salmonellosis, and tuberculosis. Health authorities moved towards enforced pasteurization to try to stop disease outbreaks and with the best intentions. And it worked. Current health authorities are acting out of a genuine concern for public safety.
