EDITORIAL: The politics of sickness - (Santa Maria Times)

Every now and then, we get not-so-subtle reminders of just how vulnerable the nation’s food supply really is.
The latest gut-wrenching event occurred in the tiny community of Locust Grove, Okla., where more than 200 people fell ill after eating at the same restaurant.
Local health officials don’t know what caused the sicknesses, and vowed to be “extremely thorough” in their investigation, so as to avoid implicating the wrong food.
If only the U.S. Food and Drug Administration would take such precautions.
