US: Safety in food topic today at ConAgra - (Omaha World-Herald, McClatchy-Tribune Information Services)
July 9, 2008 – 6:13 pmQuality experts at ConAgra Foods today will hear from a lawyer who has sued the company due to food borne illnesses and from two food safety advocates as the company stresses the need to keep its products safe.
“It’s part of raising the game and listening to every expert on the food safety front,” said Teresa Paulsen, ConAgra spokeswoman.
Bill Marler of Marler Clark in Seattle said he has spoken to corporations before and planned to talk about fostering a culture that focuses on food safety while remaining profitable in a competitive industry.
“Paying attention to food safety is ultimately good for the bottom line and good for your company morally,” Marler said.
The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that food poisoning causes about 76 million illnesses each year, with 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths.
