The foodservice industry’s concerns have extended to include where their buyers are purchasing fruits and vegetables.
“Now that food safety plays such a big role in purchasing decisions, companies are saying they need to know exactly where their products are coming from. Therefore, they’re going to growers and taking into account food safety, sustainability and social responsibility,” said Mike O’Leary, vice president of sales and marketing at Boskovich Farms Inc., Oxnard, Calif. “In essence, what they’re doing is protecting their businesses and their brands from many outside risks associated with those items.”
O’Leary said the large distribution networks are also coming into the fields more often.
“They come out and look at who their suppliers are going to be and make sure that they’re adhering to the (California Leafy Green Products Handler Marketing Agreement) and good agriculture practices and good manufacturer practices,” he said. “More than ever, at the distribution level they’re aware […]
