Ask a Doctor: Be wary of bacteria at petting zoos - (Herald Times Reporter)
June 30, 2008 – 10:49 pmDr. Jill Harman, a board-certified emergency medicine physician at Holy Family Memorial’s Emergency Department, writes:
In the emergency department, I have seen people get sick after visiting petting zoos. One grandmother had a very uncomfortable few days of stomach cramping and diarrhea. She had reminded her grandchildren to wash their hands, and then forgot to wash her own hands.
Most cases of diarrhea after visiting petting zoos are mild, start several days after infection and last five to 10 days.
Fever may or may not be present. Other cases can be more severe with kidney damage, dehydration, brain damage and death.
