OPINION: We strive for balance on awareness, reason - (The Tennessean)
June 21, 2008 – 10:41 pmKen Givens, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, writes that not too many years ago, tying a salmonella outbreak to a specific product or region would not have been possible, and may have gone entirely undetected or unreported. However, with today’s vast food safety, agriculture and health networks, agencies and the industry can detect problems and react very quickly to protect public health and safety.
While government agencies need to err on the side of public health and safety, we also have a responsibility not to create unwarranted alarm in the marketplace. Balancing awareness with reason and sound science can often be difficult as in the recent tomato alert issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
During FDA’s investigation into the source of the outbreak, we worked with them to quickly identify Tennessee farms as a safe source of fresh tomatoes. It was important to us that Tennesseans had the […]
