Maryland socialite plans to hold a fundraiser for a Cumberland County man, who’s run afoul of the Commonwealth for selling raw milk without a permit. Lyn Rales of Bethesda has long been a customer of Mennonite farmer Mark Nolt, so she’s hoping to help his struggling operation by hosting a $100-a-person benefit. Kimberly Hartkey is a spokeswoman for the Weston A. Price Foundation, which promotes the consumption of clean, raw milk. She says the June 21st fundraiser is needed because the state Agriculture Department raided Nolt’s farm and seized valuable equipment.

The West Pennsboro Township man was fined $4,000 after refusing to obtain a permit to sell raw milk products after his last one expired in August 2006. Ag officials say raw milk, which has not been pasteurized or homogenized, must be regulated due to health risks.
