EDITORIAL: Now it’s tomatoes - (New York Times)
June 12, 2008 – 8:29 pmLast week, federal officials, according to this editorial, started alerting consumers to avoid certain raw tomatoes red plums, red Romas and round reds that may have infected scores of people with a rare type of salmonella. Many grocers and restaurants rushed to remove all tomatoes from their stock an over-reaction, but an understandable one.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 160 people have been sickened, and at least 23 of them hospitalized from eating tomatoes since mid-April. Despite tracking this strain of salmonella through 17 states, the source is not yet known.
After last years problems with tainted spinach, peanut butter and imported seafood, Congress and the Bush administration promised to do a lot more to ensure the safety of the nations food supply.
