OPINION: Surviving the tomato crisis - (Press-Telegram)

Even if you had one on your menu last night, we’d bet you’re going to be OK.
How’s your tummy feeling today? Fine, most likely, since you probably haven’t eaten any tomatoes lately.
Fine if you have, too. But we don’t mean to pooh-pooh the government’s heroic efforts to track down the source of the latest salmonella outbreak, which has caused intestinal distress in at least 10 states.
It also has caused food stores and restaurants throughout the land to pull tomatoes, fresh or cooked, off their shelves and menus. Now consumers can’t buy the offending tomatoes even if they wanted to, and they evidently are trashing or returning those they bought before they got the government’s warnings.
Why don’t we just wash our tomatoes? Intelligent question, but it turns out the Food and Drug Administration would rather we just avoid three types (Roma, plum and red round) altogether, unless we know they came […]
