US: F.D.A. reports progress in tracing Salmonella - (New York Times)
June 11, 2008 – 11:38 pmWASHINGTON — Federal health officials were cited as saying Tuesday that they hoped to announce soon the source of a salmonella outbreak associated with raw tomatoes that has sickened at least 167 people in 17 states and led restaurants and grocery stores to remove some types of raw tomatoes from their menus and shelves.
Julie Zawisza, a spokeswoman for the Food and Drug Administration, was quoted as saying late Tuesday, “We are getting closer to identifying the source or sources.”
Since 1990, there have been 13 multistate outbreaks of salmonella poisoning related to tomatoes, which are particularly susceptible to contamination, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Dr. Patricia Griffin, the chief of the disease centers enteric disease epidemiology branch, was cited as saying no one knows whether food has gotten more dangerous or whether the growing number of outbreaks results from better surveillance, and that both may be true.
