WASHINGTON: E. coli illnesses tied to romaine - (Salinas Californian)

An E. coli outbreak in Washington state linked to romaine lettuce by health authorities has, according to this story, Salinas Valley growers nervous.
Dennis Donohue, chairman of the Grower-Shipper Association of Central California and Salinas mayor, was cited as saying that 60 to 70 percent of romaine lettuce annually comes from the Salinas Valley, but in May nearly all the nation’s romaine was grown here.
But he stressed “everything is still speculative.” He pointed to a recent E. coli scare at Taco Bell that was initially linked to onions, which turned out not to be the source of the bacteria.
“One thing we’ve learned is that until there’s confirmation, we can’t jump to conclusions,” Donohue said.
Donohue was further cited as saying there will always be a danger with fresh, uncooked or unpasteurized produce, adding, “I don’t know anyone who will say we’ll be at a point of zero-risk. The goal is to keep […]
