ILLINOIS: Iwan catering catastrophe still a mystery - (Southtown Star)

June 8, 2008 – 6:39 pm

Ten years ago this weekend, business was, according to this story, booming at Iwans Deli and Catering.
The Orland Park restaurant was whipping up enough chicken, mostaccioli, potato salad and cole slaw to feed 25,000 people who’d chow down at hundreds of graduation parties throughout the Southland.
Some of it was eaten at a party Phillis Kadlec hosted at her Tinley Park home for her daughter’s college graduation. About a dozen of the roughly 100 guests became ill, including Kadlec’s 10-month-old granddaughter.
The story recounts how that little girl and thousands of other people became sick after they unknowingly ingested a strain of E. coli bacteria that found its way into the Iwans food eaten at those parties over the weekend of June 6-7, 1998.
