FDA, CFIA cantaloupe tests results differ - (The Packer)
June 4, 2008 – 5:14 pmA California shipper of cantaloupes says a shipment of melons named in a Canadian Food Inspection Agency health hazard alert had no salmonella when it left the packinghouse.
Mike Farrage, Fisher Ranchs sales manager, was cited as saying a U.S. Food and Drug Administration test of Blythe, Calif.-based Fisher Ranch Corp.s melons from the same lot implicated by the CFIA contained no traces of salmonella. The story notes CFIA, however, routinely tests products pulled from retail shelves in Canada.
Acting on the CFIAs June 2 report, Toronto-based Gambles Ontario Produce Inc. issued a voluntary recall of the KingFisher-brand cantaloupes shipped by Fisher Ranch. CFIA food safety recall specialist Garfield Balsom was cited as saying the cantaloupes were shipped to Gambles Ontario May 16.
The FDA tested melons (shipped by Fisher Ranch to an FDA lab) from the same Fisher Ranch lot in question, lot 8-31NA, Farrage said. The melons were harvested in Brawley, […]
