KOREA: No choice but to renegotiate beef accord - (Digital Chosunilbo)
June 3, 2008 – 7:25 pmRecent opinion polls show that a vast majority of the Korean public wants a renegotiation of the Korea-U.S. beef accord. A survey by Gallup Korea showed that 81.2 percent of the public believes a renegotiation is necessary, while only 15.6 percent feel there is no need for such measures. Some 33.2 percent believe that eating U.S. beef puts them at risk of contracting the human form of mad cow disease. Actually, there has not been a single person in Korea or the United States of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease contracted this way, but this is the view of the Korean public.
At the center of fears is beef from cattle 30 months old or older. Thats because most of the outbreaks of mad cow disease were among older cattle. Of course, currently in the U.S., mad cow disease has not been detected in cows 30 months or even 120 months old. Thats why […]
