PENNSYLVANIA: Guest essay: The risks of raw milk have been amply documented - (Public Opinion Online)

May 23, 2008 – 8:44 pm

Dr. Stephen Ostroff, who works with the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Bureau of Epidemiology, writes that in a recent “Our View” column published by the Public Opinion, writer Matthew Major stated, “We’re not going to wade into the relative merits and safety of pasteurized milk and raw milk.”
Yet, by failing to discuss the known safety concerns about raw milk, your editorial only perpetuated the misinformation campaign surrounding this potentially dangerous product.
Milk pasteurization is one of society’s greatest public health achievements, helping to prevent millions of needless illnesses and save countless lives.
Despite that, some farmers are promoting raw milk in the mistaken belief that it is healthier or more nutritious.
The scientific evidence simply does not support this claim.
