US: Sanitary door handle prevents restroom cross-contamination - (APP.com)
May 22, 2008 – 6:57 pmLAKEWOOD The public restroom door handle was a constant source of frustration for Matthew Fulkerson. Inspired by the damp metal handles touched daily by hundreds of potentially contaminated hands, Fulkerson came up with an invention that may overcome the final obstacle to leaving a bathroom germ-free.
“I came up with the original idea back in the early 1990s,” he said. “At that point, I lived in the Detroit area. I had just used a restroom, and it was so filthy.”
Fulkerson invented a J-shaped handle, the SaniGrasp Antimicrobial Door Handle. The handle allows restroom patrons to open the door using their wrist or forearm to avoid contaminating their hand a common vector for illness-causing pathogens to reach the mouth or face.
