OPINION: Our view: Pennsylvania should clear way for raw milk sales - (Public Opinion Online)
May 20, 2008 – 8:47 pmIncreasing numbers of farmers are getting into the raw milk market, driven by consumers who eschew the pasteurization process for milk the way nature intended.
As a result, we’re hearing more reports of farmers getting into trouble with authorities, since the direct sale of raw milk to consumers is pretty much universally illegal in the United States.
The reason is safety, according to the government. Raw milk is unpasteurized, and does not undergo the heating and cooling process that kills bacteria.
It’s hard to believe so many consumers have abandoned one of the most successful public health endeavors of the 20th century.
In 1938, for example, milk caused 25 percent of all outbreaks of food- and water-related sickness. With the advent of universal pasteurization, that number fell to 1 percent by 1993, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
