Mark Nolt has become an outlaw because he sells milk.
The Newville farmer who drives a horse and buggy has become the focal point of an East Coast controversy about selling raw milk products. It’s an uncomfortable place for a Wenger Mennonite whose tradition includes not drawing attention to oneself.
Nolt was fined more than $4,000 earlier this month in Mount Holly Springs district court for selling raw milk without a permit. The Department of Agriculture in April confiscated cheese and equipment worth about $30,000, according to his friend and spokesman Jacob Stoltzfus.
“He’s as good as said he will appeal,” Stoltzfus said. “He represented himself (in magistrate’s court). He’s struggling with what to do next. It’s a tough thing for him.”
