SAN FRANSISCO: Moscone center norovirus outbreak - (KCBS)
May 9, 2008 – 7:10 pmSan Francisco’s Moscone Center has been disinfected from top to bottom after an outbreak of norovirus that has sickened some 70 people.
Attendees at the Java Conference underway at the center have also been emailed, warning them about the outbreak.
The illnesses were first reported a week ago Monday, said Susan Fernyak, director of San Francisco Communicable Disease Control and Prevention. The cause of the outbreak has not yet been identified, but the virus is easily passed from one person to another, said Fernyak. The norovirus can live on food, doorknobs, toilets and other surfaces.
Most of those sick have been employees, but a few attendees also reported symptoms. The employees have been ordered to stay home, and unaffected employees at the convention center have been told to use good hygiene procedures. There are no plans to cancel the conference being held at the convention center, Fernyak said.
