Safe food gardening - (International Food Safety Network)
May 7, 2008 – 5:22 pmOn March 22nd, 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recalled cantaloupes imported from Honduras after at least 51 people from 16 states became ill with Salmonella litchfield, 14 of which had to be hospitalized.
This was not the first outbreak in cantaloupes (http://www.foodsafety.ksu.edu/articles/1183/cantaloupe_outbreaks_.pdf). The melons were just the latest in a long list of foodborne illness outbreaks related to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Food safety concerns, along with increasing food prices and perceptions of sustainability have led more Americans searching for alternatives. Many people have started purchasing local produce, or growing their own.
However, whether purchasing from a local gardener, or starting your own garden, keep a few key questions in mind:
where is the garden located;
what type of fertilizer is used;
what is the water source;
is the garden and surrounding area properly maintained; and,
is the produce harvested safely?
